Bear Activity in Totem and Mineral King Road Areas
Please Take Additional Steps to Secure Garbage
There have been multiple reports of bins toppled and garbage distributed by bears last week. These events occurred in the lower Mineral King Road area and on the highway in the vicinity of Totem. In one incident, a bin was toppled onto the road, endangering drivers. Please drive with caution and take additional steps to secure your garbage.
- There is evidence that Mid Valley Disposal no longer locks the metal garbage bins after emptying them, and often the driver tosses the bar some distance from the bin. As a result, short term rental visitors are leaving the bins unlocked. If you own or manage a short term rental, please make sure your garbage containers are locked at all times or are stored in a secured bear-resistant enclosure at all times.
- If you have a metal garbage bin, please consider switching to a secured bear-resistant enclosure. The bins provided by Mid Valley Disposal are not bear resistant.
- If you are a short-term rental manager or owner, please refer to the guidance at https://www.bearsmart3r.org/living-with-bears/#for-lodging-owners. The guidance includes links to materials that you can provide your guests.
