Why Do All Successful Bear Smart Communities Mandate Bear-Resistant Trash Containers or Enclosures?
The goal of the Bear Smart Three Rivers project is to peacefully coexist with our bears by adopting effective and affordable solutions that have been proven successful in other communities.
Mandates aren’t popular, but all successful Bear Smart communities require certified bear-resistant trash containers or enclosures. Here’s why.
1| Partial bear resistance is the same as no bear resistance. As long as there is unprotected garbage, the problem will get worse.

Partial bear resistance equals no bear resistance.
2| Our bears are smart. At least two have learned that there is a feast available the morning of garbage pickup day.

Our bears are smart. They are learning when it is garbage day.
3| When bears become accustomed to human food, no home is safe unless it is an electrified fortress. Bears enter homes in communities that do not secure food sources, and there has been a human fatality in California as a result. The cost of electric barriers vastly exceeds the cost of bear-resistant containers.

When bears become accustomed to human food, no home is safe unless it is an electrified fortress.

Might those who are convinced go forward with a group purchase now?
We love your initiative and solution-oriented approach! Discouragingly, Mid Valley Disposal says it will apply the $12 monthly surcharge to any certified bear-resistant carts we purchase ourselves.
