County Falsely Characterizes Trash Containers as Bear Resistant
Ignores Community’s Call for Collaboration on Proven Solution

In response to the community’s ongoing calls for affordable, full bear-resistance for all in Three Rivers and for collaboration with the community to achieve this end, the county has continued to tell the community to acquire “bear resistant” carts through its hauler.

The expensive plastic carts and metal bins/dumpsters are not, however, bear resistant.

Twice this last week, a bear was able to open one of the so-called “bear resistant” carts and distribute trash along the highway. The damaged rim indicates that the bear was able to get under the lid and pry it up. The latch no longer functions.

The county has authorized its hauler to charge $144 per cart per year for these carts, even though they are not certified bear resistant.

The county also continues to characterize the metal bins/dumpsters it provides via its hauler as “bear resistant,” even though they are involved in most trash-related incidents.

With the community’s support, the Bear Smart Three Rivers team continues to urge county staff to meet with the team and collaborate with the community to implement a proven, affordable solution.
