Property Damage In Multiple Neighborhoods
Take Steps to Protect Your Property and Our Bears
This week, one of as many as three bears in the Hammond/Mineral King/Sierra Drive area have entered a home and damaged other properties. These bears have become accustomed to eating our garbage, and they have recently learned that structures contain even more high-calorie food.
We are aware that bears are becoming more bold in the North Fork and Cherokee Oaks areas as well.
A deputy is patrolling the area for bears and we are working with Fish and Wildlife. Meanwhile, all of us need to take action to keep our property and our bears safe:
- Secure all sources of food, including garbage, barbecues, pet food, and bird feeders.
- Keep your windows and doors locked when no one is home.
- If you see a bear approaching your home or garbage KEEP YOUR DISTANCE but shout loudly and wave your hands to scare it away.
- Notify bears@3rtogether.org if you see a bear, if you capture one on video, if you see toppled plastic carts and metal bins, or if a bear enters and/or damages your property. Tell us where, when, and what happened.
- If possible, please install outdoor cameras and send us videos so that we can track the bears’ movements.
- The bears are not showing aggression towards humans, but please notify us if you see a change.
Please help spread the word!
