Solo Cub on Highway in Totem Area and Streets in Hammond/Mineral King Area
Please report sightings of cubs and/or mom  and any dead bears. And… drive with caution!

Late at night on Friday June 6th, a cub was spotted by the highway in the vicinity of the Totem. Late last night, Sunday June 8th, multiple people reported a solo bear cub walking on the highway in the same general vicinity. This morning, Monday June 9th, multiple people reported a solo bear cub on the streets in the Hammond/Mineral King area.

It is very unusual for such a young cub to walk around without its mother.

Both the sheriff’s department and California Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) have received multiple reports, along with photos and a video. As of this writing, CDFW had not decided whether to take any action.

You can help!

At this point, it isn’t certain how many cubs have been spotted and if the mother is indeed missing.  There are two bear families in the vicinity. One mother has two cubs, and the other has three. Please help us by doing the following:

a) Drive extra carefully on Sierra Drive and in the Hammond/Mineral King area.

b) Report any sightings of bears in the vicinity to bears@3rtogether.org AND reg4assistant@wildlife.ca.gov (559-243-4005).

c) Report any sightings or reports of bear carcasses bears@3rtogether.org AND reg4assistant@wildlife.ca.gov (559-243-4005).
